Labette Health selects emergency department medical director

Labette Health has named Shawn Southwick, D.O., as the new medical director of the emergency department. "Dr. Southwick's extensive background in emergency medicine, as well as his dedication to Labette Health, will be the key to his successful transition and we welcome him to this very important leadership role," said Dr. Jerry Bouman, Labette Health Chief of Staff.
Dr. Southwick, a board-certified emergency physician, joined Labette Health in May 2009. A native of Garber, Okla., Dr. Southwick received a bachelor's degree in anthropology and a master's degree in business administration from University of Oklahoma in Norman before receiving his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Oklahoma State University in Tulsa.
He completed his family medicine internship and residency at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. He worked urgent-care clinics and emergency departments in Tennessee. He also worked for St. John's including St. John's urgent care and emergency department in Joplin. Prior to joining Labette Health in 2009, he was medical director of Independence Mercy Hospital's emergency department.

Labette Health's emergency department is a verified level 3 trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. Labette Health is one of only 10 ACS-verified trauma centers in the state of Kansas, joining hospitals from Hays, Hutchinson, Overland Park, Salina, Topeka, Kansas City, Pittsburg and Wichita.
